Ist so ein Hobby von mir - war ja jahrzehnte Cobol-Entwickler unter MVS, Z/OS und mache heute Abap. Möchte allerdings den Host nicht missen und fahre den halt mit Hercules hobbymäßig privat.

Der Hercules bietet gerade zum Lernen eine schöne Umgebung mit vielen Möglichkeiten und hat eine entsprechende Fangemeinschaft. Ich glaube, wer sich mit Informatik beschäftigen möchte, findet hier eine interessante Spielwiese. Schade, dass die Lizenzproblematik kommerzielle Möglichkeiten einschränkt, sonst könnte man so manche z/OS Lösung hierdurch ohne Probleme ersetzen. Aber Lizenzthemen sind natürlich eine andere Problematik.

Na ja, ich habe eigentlich nur das nackte System und die freie MVS-Software rpf und review im Einsatz. Was ich dann brauche, schreib ich mir selbst. Habe ja Cobol, Assembler, PL/1 und gerade Assembler bietet da unheimlich viele Möglichkeiten (Dynalloc, TSO-Fullscreen-Anwendungen usw...)
Selbst den sort aus MVT (von 1968) habe ich zum Laufen gebracht, Mangels 2314er Platten sortiere ich allerdings mit virtuellen Bändern - aber da das ja auch nur sequentielle Plattendateien auf dem Host (Linux) sind, ist das von der Performance her auch kein Problem. So Späße, wie das die modernen Sortierprogramme können include cond... usw, die habe ich halt als Assembler-exit selbst geschrieben. Auch doppelte entsorgen ist da kein Problem.

Dear Petitioners
We spoke today with the Vice President of Strategy for IBM's mainframe division. This call was a follow-up of a previous discussion held on the subject of our petition.
IBM has duly considered our petition and after internal discussions has come to the conclusion that rather than giving the community MVS/XA and VM/XA images (which would be 35 year old anyway) to run on our own computers, they see more value and practical sense in having the community work on a modern version of z/OS (such as versions 2.3 or 2.4).
To that extent, IBM is considering setting up a system to grant users a z/OS development environment in the cloud, and asked us to provide a few developers who would be willing to advise with IBM on designing this cloud solution.
So, while we are not getting what we petitioned for, we are still making a nice step forward in having easier access to a modern mainframe operating system in which to learn, develop and innovate.
