General Impression:
My five year old T42 feels much worthier and robust, the lid is more rigid. I am used to carry the notebook by holding it at its lid. The T400s is almost one kilogram lighter, but is better carried around with the lid closed.
Compared to my old T42 the Display is much brighter but worse in resolution per mm²:
T400s Display 303x190mm = 575,70cm² with 1440x900 pixel = 22,5 pixel/mm² = 350ppi
T42 Display 286x214mm = 612,04cm² with 1400x1050 pixel = 24 pixel/mm² = 372ppi.
Surprisingly the lower resolution is obvious with a much worse graphic presentation.
The fan is absolutely low noise, in general you cannot discriminate the fan working or not.
The keyboard is of well-known thinkpad-quality. You can get used to altered design of Escape- and Delete-button almost instantly. Alt, AltGr and Ctrl became smaller, furthermore there are now a Windows-button and a Menu-button.
The Power-button indicates power-on with an ugly green led. It can be switched off with
, but by reboot, its on again.
Installation with Debian 502a-i386-CD1 from
here without any problems.
Installed Kernel packages 2.6.26-686-bigmem and additionally 2.6.30-686-bigmem from unstable.
For WiFi proprietary firmware is needed. Download from
http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/d ... 4.2.12.tgz and unpack to /lib/firmware. The kernel 2.6.30 contains the driver. For backported kernel for Lenny have a look at
http://wiki.debian.org/iwlagn.
Bluetooth can only be toggled together with WLAN on and off.
The camera works with vlc:
gives excellent resolution even in fullscreen mode with slightly pale colours and acceptable sharpness. If it does not work properly, try
.
With kopete I cannot use the camera.
